Special Educational Needs and Disabilities policy

Introduction

Introduction

At The Happy Human Project, we are committed to fostering an inclusive environment where every child can participate fully, regardless of their individual needs. We recognise that some children require additional support and adjustments to help them thrive, and we aim to meet those needs wherever possible.

Aims

Aims

To provide a nurturing and supportive environment for children with additional educational, medical, emotional, or behavioural needs.

  1. To ensure clear communication between parents, carers, and staff regarding a child’s specific requirements, allowing us to prepare and provide appropriate support.

  2. To evaluate whether we can adequately meet each child’s needs and, where necessary, recommend alternatives if we are unable to do so.

Disclosure and assessment of needs

Disclosure and assessment of needs

Upon registration for our camps, parents and carers are asked to complete a detailed form outlining their child’s medical, emotional, or behavioural needs, including any support they receive in school (such as 1-to-1 assistance). This information is vital for ensuring that we have the correct staffing and resources in place.

We kindly request that parents provide honest and comprehensive details regarding their child's needs to help us assess if our environment is suitable for them.

If a child typically requires 1-to-1 support at school or has significant additional needs, this must be disclosed at the time of booking. We will discuss with parents whether we are able to provide the necessary level of care and support during camp, and we will be transparent if we are unable to accommodate specific needs.

Staffing and support

Staffing and support

Our general staff-to-child ratio is two staff members for every 16 children at Camp, or one staff member for 10 children at an after-school club. However, if a child’s additional needs require a higher level of support (such as 1-to-1 assistance), we will carefully assess whether this can be arranged. If we are unable to provide the required support, we will communicate this to parents and discuss potential alternatives.

Reasonable adjustments

Reasonable adjustments

Where possible, we will make reasonable adjustments to accommodate children with SEND, such as modifying activities or providing additional resources. Our priority is to create a positive, accessible experience for every child, while maintaining a safe and supportive environment for all participants.

Monitoring and review

Monitoring and review

This policy will be reviewed regularly to ensure that it reflects current legislation and best practices. Feedback from parents, carers, and staff is welcome, and we are committed to continually improving our approach to SEND.
